Don’t judge a book by it’s cover – a phrase that commonly refers to drawing conclusions based on looks, I have come to the realization, holds true with dance styles and their names. Again, I have found myself walking into the studio and faced with a dance style that I completely misinterpreted based on title alone.
When I first saw the words ‘Beginning Jive’ on the schedule, this dance is what immediately came to mind:
Needless to say, there were no funky hand jive movements or cheesy face expressions required for this introduction dance. Instead, the class consisted of continuous triple-steps and Latin style dance moves.
The dance was fun, but for some reason, despite the fact that I had already accepted the style of dance, Sha Na Na was stuck in my head and was not going away anytime soon.
